Hello, My name is Kelsey and I’m the Physicians Assistant at Alaska Breast Care and Surgery. I was born and raised in Eagle River, Alaska. Growing up as the only girl amongst five brothers, I learned the value of resilience and compassion early on. My love for the outdoors runs deep, and I find solace in Alaska's stunning landscapes through activities like hiking, camping, and snowboarding. I live in Anchorage with my fiancé, Kory, and our two retrievers, Sable and Harlow.

I worked as a Certified Medical Assistant at Plastic Surgeons of Alaska in 2014, where I helped cared for cosmetic and reconstructive patients. It was this work that truly ignited my passion for breast cancer care. Holding a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Washington State University (2012) and a Master's in Clinical Health Science and Physician Assistant Education from MEDEX Northwest: University of Washington (2020), I underwent extensive clinical training. This included diverse preceptorships across Alaska, Alabama, and Montana, encompassing behavioral health, addiction, primary care, emergency medicine, and various surgical specialties such as general, orthopedic, and cardiothoracic surgery.

My master's capstone paper delved into the impact of breast reconstruction on the mental health outcomes of women battling breast cancer. This research was a tribute to my late cousin, Becky, who tragically succumbed to metastatic breast cancer shortly after my graduation from PA school. Becky's fervent wish was for enhanced access to mental health and supportive care services for breast cancer patients and their families. My subsequent findings revealed a notable gap in understanding women's mental health beyond treatment, particularly concerning interpersonal relationships, body image, self-esteem, sexual health, anxiety, and depression. I feel passionate about bridging these gaps in care and making Becky’s wish a reality.

My professional journey led me to vascular surgery, where I gained invaluable experience in surgical and inpatient care. Despite the technical challenges and complexities of the field, I yearned for deeper patient connections. The transition to Alaska Breast Care as a Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) was a pivotal moment, reaffirming my passion for breast cancer care.

My mission is to destigmatize breast cancer and empower survivors to reclaim their lives with confidence. I am committed to delivering comprehensive clinical care while prioritizing the mental health and holistic well-being of my patients in their journey beyond cancer.

In addition to my clinical endeavors, I established Boomtown Aesthetics- A sanctuary where individuals can rejuvenate both body and spirit. As I expand this venture into a wellness center, I aim to foster collaboration with fellow breast cancer support providers, furthering our collective mission of healing and empowerment.

I am honored to stand alongside esteemed colleagues like Dr. Marilyn Sandford, whose dedication to breast oncology inspires me daily. Together, we strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by breast cancer.

With gratitude, Kelsey Cain-to-Be
